What is MTS file?
Files exported from camcorders usually come with a .mts extension. Sony and Panasonic developed the MTS format to encode videos captured with their high definition camcorders. It is now a format widely used by most high definition camcorders. To retain the high quality of videos captured, video data has to be encoded using the Advanced Video Codec-High Definition (AVCHD) format, which outputs the files with MTS extension. It is not possible to play MTS files directly with common media players, format conversion is nearly always necessary.
Common Media Players
Common media players include Windows Media Player, VLC Player, Real Player and QuickTime. Windows Media Player supports a great number of media formats, including .wma, .wmv, .wm, .avi, .mp3, .mp4, .mpeg, .mov, .rm, etc, but does not offer support for .mts files. VLC Player is a popular alternative to Windows Media Player, it supports almost all MPEG format files, including DivX, XviD and high quality H.264 encoded files. Files that can be opened with Windows Media Player can be played on VLC Player. Real Player is yet another popular media player. Real Player is typically used to play Real media formats such as .rv, .rm, .rmvb. It also supports various other formats including popular formats like .mpg,.mpeg, .avi, .divx, .wma, .wmv, .mov, .flv, etc. For Mac users, the choice player is usually QuickTime, which comes with the Mac OS by default. Formats supported by QuickTime obviously include .mov, .mp4, .m4v, etc and also non-QuickTime specific formats like .avi, .wma, .wmv, .flv, etc.
As noted from the above, none of the common media players support MTS video files. Another quick thinking is to use Windows Movie Maker to import MTS files and then export it as a popular format. However, it must be noted that Windows Movie Maker does not recognize MTS format as well. So, how can one play their camcorder videos in common media players then? A format conversion is needed in this case. Herein, a useful MTS Converter for Windows is introduced. The MTS Converter is able to convert MTS to avi, MTS to mp4, MTS to wmv, MTS to mov, and many other popular media formats.
